Carl A. Wournell, 91 of Toms River, formally New Brunswick - died peacefully at home Saturday, March 17, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Nanticoke, PA May 31, 1926 to Frederick W. and Catherine M. (Tyrell) Wournell. The family later moved to New Brunswick where Carl graduated from New Brunswick High School Class of 1944. He joined the US Army and later served in the US Air Force for a combined 20 year military career. Carl served in WWII and the Korean War, retiring as a technical sergeant. He worked as a letter carrier for the US Postal Service and retired in 1995. Carl moved to Toms River in 2006 where he could be found soaking up the sun, poolside, declaring "THIS IS PARADISE". He spent many years cheering on his favorite sports teams the NY Mets, Jets, Knicks & Rutgers, reading a good book, and feasting at local buffets. He enjoyed long walks on the Seaside boardwalk and watching his grandchildren jump around the pool. Carl's 5 grandchildren lovingly referred to him as "Grandan" and "Cheeky" and he always made time for them. He had a special knack for entertaining children wherever he went and they loved to be around him. Carl is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Maureen (Quinn); his daughter Allison and her husband Naoum Azzi, their children Hana and Sean; his son Dean and his wife Colleen, their children Darleen, Sabreena and Katreena; his sister Ruth "Mickey" Brown of Nanticoke, PA; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, his oldest son Carlton Q. in 1981, and his siblings: Marion, Jessica, Charles, George, Lillian and Catherine. A funeral mass to celebrate Carl's life will take place Saturday March 24 at St. Peter the Apostle Church in New Brunswick, NJ at 10am.
