Elizabeth E. O'Shea Obituary

In Loving Memory of Elizabeth "Betty" O'Shea

November 20, 1935 – December 13, 2025

With broken hearts, we share that Elizabeth (Betty) O'Shea passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025, at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family at home in Holmdel, New Jersey.

Betty was a woman of unwavering kindness, quiet strength, and generous spirit. She lived a life grounded in integrity, love, and service—to her community, her church, and most of all, her family.

Born in Newark and raised in Highland Park, Betty's love story began early. She married her high school sweetheart, Dennis, and theirs was a partnership that would span 68 years—built on deep devotion, shared laughter, and enduring love. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, where family always came first.

After graduating from Highland Park High School, Betty worked as a secretary at Johnson & Johnson before dedicating herself to raising her three children. She threw herself wholeheartedly into their lives and their schools—serving on the PTO and eventually as its president, volunteering in classrooms, and creating a home that was always the gathering place for neighborhood children. When Nancy, her youngest, was in elementary school, Betty returned to work part-time as secretary at Second Reformed Church of New Brunswick, a position she held for over a decade. Later, she worked part-time in the Purchasing department at Janssen Pharmaceutical before she and Dennis retired to Florida.

Betty and Dennis shared a passion for adventure and community. As a member of the New Jersey Jayceettes, Betty traveled to conventions with Dennis, forging friendships that would last a lifetime. They treasured their family trips to Aruba, where some of their happiest memories were made. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she was a devoted member of Second Reformed Church of New Brunswick and later Northwood Presbyterian Church in Palm Harbor, Florida.

After moving to Palm Harbor, Betty discovered an unexpected love for golf and became involved with the Leading Ladies. She also helped distribute the church newsletter, always finding ways to serve and connect with others.

But it was at home where Betty truly shined. She was a gracious hostess who genuinely loved bringing people together—especially during the annual Board of Education Christmas parties she hosted throughout Dennis's tenure on the Edison Board of Education. A cup of tea and a cookie were always available at Betty's kitchen table. Her door was always open, her table always set, and everyone who entered felt welcomed and loved.

Above all else, Betty cherished her family. Nothing brought her greater joy than time spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. When she and Dennis moved to Florida shortly after their fifth grandchild was born, she worried "that baby won't know me." True to her heart, she visited New Jersey as often as possible, determined that distance would never diminish her presence in their lives. Each summer, she and Dennis invited one grandchild at a time to Florida, spoiling them with undivided attention and creating treasured memories.

When Nancy's family lived in Florida, Betty and Dennis picked up the girls weekly for their special tradition—a trip to Downtown Disney to ride the carousel. They went so often the carousel operator knew the girls by name. No matter where they lived, Betty and Dennis always returned to New Jersey for holidays, especially Christmas, to be surrounded by family. For Betty, family wasn't just important; it was everything.

Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dennis in June of this year; her mother Eleanor Anizell; her sister Dorothy Bagnell; and nephew Dan Bagnell. She leaves behind her sons Thomas O'Shea (Felicity), Brian O'Shea (Catherine), and daughter Nancy Macke (Eric); her grandchildren Gavin (Alanna), Lauren (James), Connor, Morgan, Jaclyn (Matthew), Timothy (Kristin), Erin, and Katelyn; seven great-grandchildren who brought her endless pride and happiness; and her sisters-in-law Marie Harris, Patricia Gagliano (Richard), and Barbara O'Shea (Richard Eschle).

A memorial service celebrating Betty's life will be held at Second Reformed Church, New Brunswick, NJ, on January 24, 2026. Family will receive visitors at 10:30 a.m., with the memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to College Avenue Community Church, 100 College Avenue, New Brunswick, NJ 08901 (https://secure.myvanco.com/L-Z2GA/campaign/C-15MCN).

Betty's life was well-lived, full of love, laughter, and service. She will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
