Obituary of Peter R. Strohm

Peter Richard Strohm, 69, of Mantoloking, New Jersey, passed away peacefully at this home on July 27, 2016. Peter was born on August 15, 1946, in Hollywood, Florida, to August and Dora (Liegener) Strohm. He moved to New Jersey and attended kindergarten in Long Beach Island. Thereafter, he was raised in Lakewood and graduated from Lakewood High School. In 1968 he graduated cum laude from Washington & Lee University in Virginia with a B.A. in Economics. Peter received his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 1971 and an LL.M from the New York University School of Law in 1981. In 1988, he graduated from the United States Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. A native to the Shore Area his entire life, Peter became a resident of Mantoloking in 1976. He was a principal in the law firm of Rothstein, Mandell, Strohm & Halm in Lakewood, NJ, where he had been since 1971. From 1968 to 1996, Peter served in the US Army Reserve eventually retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. For 13 years he was an Adjunct Professor of Law at Georgian Court University in Lakewood. Peter was a member of the Ocean County Bar Association and served as its President from 1995 through 1996. He also chaired several committees of the Ocean County Bar Association as well as of the New Jersey Supreme Court, including probate, chancery and judicial appointments. In 2000, he received the Professionalism Award from the New Jersey State Bar Association. In addition to his legal activities, Peter was a member at All Saints Episcopal Church in Bay Head, NJ which spanned decades with major involvements with a variety of ministries. One of the highlights of his time at All Saints includes his being the Chair of the Centennial Committee when the church celebrated the one hundredth anniversary of it founding, which occurred on July 7, 1889. During all of 1989, Peter was actively coordinating the events that marked this special occasion. In addition to faithful, regular attendance, Peter had served on the Vestry, the governing body of the church, numerous times. Peter was the church historian; he was a faithful voice in the All Saints choir; and he lent his significant talents as an attorney to assist with the operations of the church. He was a past president of the Lakewood Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the Alumni Council of Washington & Lee University and was a Trustee of Georgian Court University. Peter was also on the Board of Visitors of the Columbia University School of Law. He served as a Councilman of the Borough of Mantoloking since 2006, and he was appointed by the Governor of New Jersey in 2006 to serve as a State Officer on the Tidelands Resource Council. He was a proud member of the Bay Head Yacht Club and the Mantoloking Yacht Club. Semi-Retired, he enjoyed traveling the world including trips to Germany, Greece, Japan, India, Vietnam, Cambodia and many other areas of the world. He was predeceased by his parents, August Strohm and Dora Strohm, and his aunt, Caroline Smith. He is survived by his sister, Dorothy Strohm of Whiting, NJ, many relatives in Germany as well as many loving and faithful friends, old and new. Funeral services will be held at the All Saints Episcopal Church, located at 500 Lake Avenue, Bay Head, NJ, at 11:00 am on Friday, August 5, 2016. A memorial celebration of Peter's life will be held at the Bay Head Yacht Club, 111 Metcalfe Street, Bay Head on Sunday, August 14, 2016 from 5:30 to 9:30 pm.
