Obituary of Ruth G. Abos

Ruth Abos, age 93, long-time resident of Toms River, formerly of Newark, New Jersey passed away on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Wall, NJ. Daughter of Isabelle and William Abos, Ruth attended Montclair State College and graduated with in degree in English. She then attended Seton Hall University and earned her Master's Degree in English and French. Ruth moved to Toms River in 1964 and commuted on the 5:20am train each day to her job teaching English at Arts High School in Newark where she taught English and was a Guidance Counselor. She taught there for 42 years and retired in 1984. Ruth also directed all the plays put on by the students. In the summers, Ruth worked for the Essex County Park Systems, overseeing playgrounds. After her retirement, Ruth enjoyed reading books, attending mass, and doing the New York Times crossword puzzle in her signature green ink every day. She loved cats and had them as companions most of her life. She also enjoyed boating and crabbing in Silver Bay in her boat, The Holly Belle. Her favorite expression was "Fine and Dandy!" Ruth regularly attended St. Justin's Catholic Church in Toms River, and proudly served in the food pantry with her friends each Wednesday. Although Ruth never married and had children of her own, she adored her students and doted on her niece and nephew and her great nieces and nephews. Ruth had three siblings �" Genevieve M. Snyder, Edward G. Jones and Robert W. Jones. All three siblings are deceased. Ruth leaves her sister-in-law, Maureen Jones, of Fort Myers, Florida; her niece, Patricia Jones, and her great nephew, Jesse Kahaner, both of Vienna, Virginia. She also leaves her nephew, R. Gregory Jones, her great nephew Robert M. Jones, and her twin great nieces, Shannon and Meaghan Jones, all of Long Valley, NJ. Friends and relatives may pay their respects at Kedz Funeral Home, 1123 Hooper Ave., Toms River on Friday from 2 to 4 & 7 to 9 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Justin's Church, 975 Fischer Blvd. Toms River, on Saturday at 9:30am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Ruth's name to the Ocean County Animal Shelter or the Ocean County Library.
