Sam J. Porcello, 76 of Toms River, passed away Saturday, May 12, 2012. He was a Principal Scientist for Nabisco for 34 years where he was known as "Mr. Oreo". He holds 5 patents relating to Oreo and developed the current Oreo filling and chocolate covered Oreos. He worked at their Fair Lawn plant, and later at their East Hanover Headquarters, retiring in 1993. Sam was a volunteer for ACDI/VOCA, through which he was proud to have helped a developing food company in Thailand. He was a member of US Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 16-05 and served as a vessel examiner. He was an active member of the Toms River Seaport Society for more than 35 years, and was also a member of the Lakewood American Legion and the Brick Elks, Lodge 2151. Sam was born and raised in Newark and lived in Wayne before moving to Toms River in 1974. Surviving are his wife Karen; sons, David and his partner Kevin Smith of Las Vegas, and Curtis and his wife Theresa of Brielle; his loving grandchildren, Jacqueline and Curtis Jr.; and his dog and constant companion Evry. Visitation will be held at the Kedz Funeral Home, 1123 Hooper Ave., Toms River on Wednesday from 4 until 8 pm with a funeral service at 7:30pm.
