Joe and my dad, Pat O’Donnell, were Vice-Principals together for much of their time at Madison Central (and the other incarnations of that high school). They were a great pair. I knew Joe as I was growing up through various high school events my dad would take me, too. I got to know him better years later, after the (dismal) Rutgers football games. They kept renewing their tickets season after season (getting better seats each year as the team got worse). We’d see them after the games. He always told great stories. We’ll miss you Joe. Say hello to Pat.

Mr. Sweeney was my vice principal at Madison Central H.S. I remember him as a very nice man who always took the time to walk the hallways to say Hello and stop and speak to us students. He was a fair man that demanded respect and he received it ! Mr. Sweeney will always be talked about and never forgotten from the students who were lucky enough to know him. Rest in peace Mr. Sweeney and God bless your family ❤.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time. Joe was a wonderful friend to my grandparents, Glenn and Dorothy Walker. I have many fond memories of playing golf with him.

For a number of years, I was privileged to work in Madison Central HS with Joe, a man who embodied compassion and care. I will be there in spirit on Tuesday celebrating Joe’s life, a life that brought beauty and encouragement to so many. May his family be comforted and st peace.

My husband and I were so very sorry to read of Joe's passing. We lived next door to him for 18 years and always enjoyed watching him tend to his gardens. He had the most beautiful gardens that I have ever seen. He would always stop to talk when he saw us outside and he always had stories to tell. Our sincere condolences to his family.
