I had the pleasure to work with Al for over 10 years. When he retired, I wrote a poem - Ode to Al - back in the days before Artificial Intelligence, which, I’m sure Al would say “How about we get some authentic intelligence before we start messing with Artificial Intelligence?”. He had an incredible work ethic and sly sense of humor, which anyone who knew him would agree. You never forget a guy like Al.
Ode to Al

Al is retiring after thirty-two some-odd years
It’s a time for rejoicing and it’s a time for some tears
The rejoicing’s for Al who can stay-home and do jack
but the tears are for us who have to keep coming back.
We didn’t always do things like at “the old shop”
but that never deterred him or made him just stop
He always ran his press with a whistle and a smile
although some old machines tried his patience a while
With rubber bands and glue and maybe some spit
Al kept the old presses running though they ran like junk.
Then we purchased the QM-46
it was one press he didn’t always need to go fix
Printing became just a bit more tidy
He liked it so much, he started calling it “Heidi”
and there is not a machine in the back he can’t run
and anyone who worked with him has had nothing but fun
His wry sense of humor may catch you off guard
but he never stopped caring and working so hard
He’s a bit like a s’more, let me tell you what I mean
On the outside he’s crusty and hard it may seem
but if you look in the heart of this head pressman you’ll see
he’s filled with marshmallow and he’s as soft as can be.
Now he can relax and eat Ring Dings all day
It’s been a good run, that much I can say
For all that he’s taught me and all the ass-kickings I got
I’m glad that I knew him and I will miss him a lot.
Good luck Al!

Al, our neighbor/friend for decades was like a warm security blanket, kind and gently person always looking out for his neighbors.
I would see him almost every day. Our yards back up to eachother. I heard his feeders "clunk" as he filled them for the many beautiful birds he attracted to our yards. He loved feeding the wildlife, and playing catch with his beloved black labs he had over the years. I remember one occasion when I had a very large frog in the pool deep end of the pool. I was quite distraught and Al was out back and quickly came to my aid and rescued the frog for me! He always looked out for us and all of his neighbors! I will soooo miss seeing him out back perfectly manicuring his yard, feeding the birds and playing with his dog. Al always had a kind greeting and a caring way. I hope he is looking down and knowing that we will do our best to continue feeding the birds, as he is up there flying with them now. He will be greatly missed and I will think of him every single day. Being out in our backyard will never be the same.
