Obituary of Alfred Harbord

Alfred Harbord, 78 of Toms River passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2025. Alfred was born in Bremen, Germany to the late Henry and Herta Harbord. He moved to the United States in November 1953 and gained his citizenship in May 1959. Alfred resided in the Bronx, NY graduating from Junior High in 1961. In 1962 he moved to Toms River and graduated from Toms River High School in 1965. He met the love of his life, Ruth, at Shoprite where they both were employed. Alfred and Ruth married in February 1967. He was a proud Vietnam Veteran who served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in May of 1968. During his service he received many medals. After Alfred served our country, he worked for Urner Barry for 32 years as a Head Pressman and retired in August 2008. He had many hobbies including HAM Radio, trains, and coin collecting. He enjoyed baseball and was an avid New York Yankee fan. He was also a proud member of the American Legion Post 129 where he did The Sound-Off newsletter from 2012-2024 and won many awards for his work. He was also the unoffical photographer and would post to the website and social media. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor who would give you the shirt off his back. Alfred is predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruth Harbord in 2013, and his brothers, Harold and Gerhard Harbord. He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Harbord and her fiancé Sergio Fernandez; son, Michael Harbord, Sr.; grandchildren, Mikayla and Michael Jr.; brother, Egmont Harbord and his wife Rosa, and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 13, 2025, from 4 – 7 pm at Kedz Funeral Home, 1123 Hooper Avenue, Toms River, NJ. Final goodbyes will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, at 10:00 am. Interment to follow at 11:30 am at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, 62 Cedar Grove Road, Toms River.
